The heat rejection requirement of an ESS Cooling System depends on the C-rate of the battery, the ambient temperature, and the enclosure design. For a typical 1 MW / 2 MWh containerized storage system operating at a 0.5C charge and discharge rate, the heat generation is approximately 2 to 3 percent of the rated power. This means a 1 MW system generates 20 to 30 kW of heat. For a 2C application, which is common in grid frequency regulation, the heat generation rises to 6 to 8 percent, or 60 to 80 kW. The ESS Cooling System must remove this heat while maintaining the cell temperature within the optimal range of 15°C to 35°C and the temperature differential within the module to less than 3°C.
The table below shows the heat rejection requirements for different C-rates and system sizes.
| System size | C-rate | Heat generation (kW) | Required cooling capacity (kW) | Typical ESS Cooling System type |
| 500 kW / 1 MWh | 0.5C | 10 – 15 | 15 – 20 | Air-cooled |
| 1 MW / 2 MWh | 0.5C | 20 – 30 | 30 – 40 | Air-cooled or liquid-cooled |
| 1 MW / 2 MWh | 1C | 40 – 60 | 60 – 80 | Liquid-cooled |
| 2 MW / 4 MWh | 2C | 120 – 160 | 160 – 200 | Liquid-cooled |
Ningbo Hicon Industry Co., Ltd. manufactures both air-cooled and liquid-cooled ESS Cooling System units. Our factory designs the cooling capacity based on the customer's C-rate and ambient temperature profile. We also provide a thermal simulation report that predicts the cell temperature under the worst-case operating conditions.
The performance difference between air-cooled and liquid-cooled ESS Cooling System is most evident in three areas: heat transfer coefficient, temperature uniformity, and parasitic power consumption. The heat transfer coefficient of air is 25 to 100 W/m²K, while the heat transfer coefficient of a liquid coolant (such as a 50/50 glycol-water mixture) is 500 to 2,000 W/m²K. This means that a liquid-cooled system can remove heat 10 to 20 times more effectively per unit of surface area. The second difference is temperature uniformity. In an air-cooled system, the air flows around the battery modules, and the modules closest to the air inlet are cooler than those at the outlet. The temperature differential across a container can be 5 to 8°C. In a liquid-cooled system, the coolant flows through cold plates that are in direct contact with the battery cells, and the temperature differential is typically 2 to 3°C. The third difference is parasitic power. The fans in an air-cooled system consume 3 to 5 percent of the system's rated power. The pumps in a liquid-cooled system consume 1 to 2 percent. The table below compares these parameters.
| Parameter | Air-cooled ESS Cooling System | Liquid-cooled ESS Cooling System |
| Heat transfer coefficient (W/m²K) | 25 – 100 | 500 – 2,000 |
| Temperature uniformity (ΔT within container) | 5 – 8°C | 2 – 3°C |
| Parasitic power (% of rated power) | 3 – 5% | 1 – 2% |
| Maximum heat rejection per container | 30 – 40 kW | 100 – 200 kW |
| Maintenance requirement | Filter replacement, fan inspection | Coolant quality check, pump inspection |
In our factory, we have tested both types of ESS Cooling System under identical load profiles. The liquid-cooled system maintained the cell temperature within 2.5°C of the setpoint, while the air-cooled system showed a 7°C variation. This difference directly affects the battery life. A 5°C increase in cell temperature can reduce the cycle life by 20 to 30 percent.
The choice between air-cooled and liquid-cooled ESS Cooling System also depends on the site conditions. Air-cooled systems are preferred in locations with moderate ambient temperatures (below 35°C), low dust levels, and sufficient space for air circulation. They are simpler to install and maintain, and they have a lower initial cost. Liquid-cooled systems are preferred in locations with high ambient temperatures (above 40°C), high dust or humidity, or where space is limited. They are also preferred for high C-rate applications where the heat rejection requirement exceeds the capacity of an air-cooled system. The table below provides a site condition selection guide.
| Site condition | Recommended ESS Cooling System | Reason |
| Ambient temperature < 35°C, low dust | Air-cooled | Lower cost, simpler maintenance |
| Ambient temperature > 40°C | Liquid-cooled | Higher heat rejection capacity |
| High dust or humidity | Liquid-cooled | Sealed coolant loop, less contamination |
| C-rate > 1C | Liquid-cooled | Higher heat flux requires direct cooling |
| Space-constrained installation | Liquid-cooled | Smaller footprint per kW of cooling |
| Remote location with limited maintenance | Air-cooled | Fewer components, easier to service |
Ningbo Hicon Industry Co., Ltd. provides a site assessment service to help customers determine the optimal ESS Cooling System for their specific location. We evaluate the ambient temperature profile, the dust and humidity levels, the space constraints, and the maintenance resources available.
The initial cost of a liquid-cooled ESS Cooling System is 20 to 40 percent higher than an air-cooled system of the same capacity. However, the total cost of ownership over a 10-year project life may favor the liquid-cooled option for high-utilization projects. The higher initial cost is offset by three factors: lower parasitic power consumption, longer battery life, and reduced maintenance. The parasitic power saving is 2 to 3 percent of the system's rated power. For a 1 MW system operating 4,000 hours per year, that is 80,000 to 120,000 kWh saved per year. The battery life extension is 20 to 30 percent, which delays the battery replacement cost. The maintenance cost is lower because the sealed coolant loop does not require filter replacement. The table below shows a 10-year total cost of ownership comparison for a 1 MW / 2 MWh system.
| Cost component | Air-cooled ESS Cooling System | Liquid-cooled ESS Cooling System |
| Initial cooling system cost | $80,000 | $110,000 |
| Parasitic power cost (10 years, $0.10/kWh) | $160,000 | $60,000 |
| Battery replacement (year 10 vs. year 8) | $400,000 (year 8) | $400,000 (year 10) |
| Maintenance cost (10 years) | $30,000 | $15,000 |
| Total 10-year cost | $670,000 | $585,000 |
The liquid-cooled system saves $85,000 over 10 years, despite the higher initial cost. The saving is primarily from the reduced parasitic power and the delayed battery replacement. For projects with lower utilization or lower electricity costs, the air-cooled system may be more cost-effective.
The choice between air-cooled and liquid-cooled ESS Cooling System depends on the heat rejection requirement, the site conditions, and the total cost of ownership. Air-cooled systems are suitable for low C-rate applications in moderate climates. Liquid-cooled systems are required for high C-rate applications, high ambient temperatures, and space-constrained installations. The total cost of ownership over a 10-year project life often favors the liquid-cooled option for high-utilization projects because of lower parasitic power and longer battery life.
